The Power Behind the Sound
After helping John Hiatt record his album “Master of Disaster” on the Sonoma DSD system, John was asked in an interview why he would go through the trouble to make his record on such an unconventional system. His answer was: "What the ears hear, the heart must believe.” Nothing describes what is so special about DSD better than that answer. The Time Domain Resolution (sample rate) of DSD is in the millions. That’s far closer to the infinite time domain resolution of analog sound than that of typical digital recording systems. As we approach infinite resolution in the time domain, the emotional connection becomes much stronger because we believe what we hear. It’s not about the way it sounds. It’s about the way it feels.

What Is DSD?
DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a high-resolution audio format renowned for its warmth, clarity, and nuanced sound, capturing music with extraordinary depth and emotional resonance. Unlike conventional formats, DSD uses a one-bit signal at extremely high sampling rates—often in the millions—resulting in a more natural, immersive, and lifelike listening experience. Originally developed by Sony and Philips for archival purposes, DSD has become a favorite among audiophiles, musicians, and sound healers for its unmatched fidelity and emotional impact. At Animal Lane, DSD is more than just a recording technology; it’s a tool for crafting healing-centered, emotionally resonant music.
DSD at Animal Lane
Animal Lane features a dedicated wing for DSD technology, powered by a 32-channel Sonoma system installed by Gus Skinas, a pioneer in DSD development. Our setup maintains pure analog signal paths through the Trident TSM console and outboard gear, preserving recording integrity without unnecessary conversions. While not every session uses DSD, it is available for artists seeking its unique sonic qualities and emotional depth.
